Abstract

Arriving in Diyarbakir on 27 March 1916, Mustafa Kemal Pasha took command and command of the 16th Corps on the Bitlis-Muş - Ognut front. The purpose of the 16th Corps was to halt the enemy's advance until preparations for the offensive were completed. The 5th Division would cover and secure the area between the Botan Valley and the Strait of Bitlis to the east of Bitlis until the preparations needed to retake Bitlis were completed, especially protecting the Strait of Bitlis.
