Abstract

In today's educational life, one of the most frequently visited places by students is school canteens. Canteens are accepted as an important element of education life. Canteens which are described as school grocery stores have started to take their places in the Ottoman education since the end of the 19th century. The purpose of this article is to throw light on the selection of the tenants of the school grocery stores, the regulations made on this subject, the usage of the income of the school grocery, the products sold and banned in the school grocery stores, the inspections etc. and to clarify the issues. As a result of the study, the sensitivity of the Ottoman Ministry of Education about the school grocery stores, which are closely related to the health of the students, was observed. In addition, intense competition of tenants was witnessed for obtaining the operating rights of school grocery stores. However, it was observed that there was a change in the leasing procedures of school grocery stores during the process. The complaints of the students and the people, the economic conditions of the period and the wrong practices of the school grocers were effective in the realization of this change.
