CHILDREN AND CHILDHOOD ISSUES IN CUMHURIYET NEWSPAPER (1928-1939)

Abstract
In this article, the approach of the Cumhuriyet newspaper - which is The Turkish Government’s informal Gazette- to the issues of children and childhood in Turkey between 1928-1939 was examined. In the first part of the study, the understanding and legal developments of the new regime towards children and childhood are discussed in a comparative way with the Ottoman past. In the second part, the news and discourses of Cumhuriyet newspaper on children and childhood in the modern education system were analyzed. In the third part, the newspaper’s approach to the child as a social entity has been revealed. In the last part, the approach of Cumhuriyet newspaper to the problems experienced by children such as poverty, nutrition, accommodation and child labor has been tried to be determined. So the attitudes of the new regime and the newspaper towards the issue of children and childhood are discussed with a holistic perspective and the practices towards the first generation of the Republic regime have been put forward.
