Abstract

After the victory of the National Struggle, Grand National Assembly aimed to avoid two-headed governing, dismissing the sultanate and caliphate, abolished the sultanate. As sultan Vahideddin arrived on, Abdülmecid was elected as caliphate. But he forced his authorities and some politicians and people were in side of him, and another processes caused to abolish caliphate. Thus, the caliphate had abolished by the GNA, on March 3, 1924 within the code numbered 431. In this article, the past characteristics of the plain inwhich Islam established, the model of society that Kouran shaped, the death of prophet without electing the successor, the state institution and sovereignty aspect in Islam, the using of caliphate title by the Ottoman sultans and the process of abolishing the caliphate by the new established republic, are scrutinized.
