Abstract

Afghanistan had been a key country during the great war for British cxis- tence in Asia with regard to defense of India as a neutral State. Since German and her ally Ottoman goverments tried to take Afghanistan into their alliance British govemment became anxious about aspects of these attempts. When a draft treaty between Germany and Afghanistan was discovered in addition to the loss of Russia as an ally following the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, Britain's concerns about Afghanistan grew. To keep the Amir of Afghanistan in their line the British policy-makers discussed and developed some policies which are the main subjects of this study.
