Abstract

In the modern age, relations between states have become very complex and multidimensional. As a result of this, the place and importance of foreign sources in writing the history of nations and states is increasing. Turks established states in different parts of the world and interacted with many nations. Therefore, in researching Turkish history, it is necessary to use the sources of the states with which it has relations and interaction. Using foreign sources will confirm local records and also provide the opportunity to access new information.

The history of relations between Turks and Italians date back hundreds of years. There have been multifaceted relations between the two countries, from politics to trade, from art to sports. Mutual use of official and private archives is a must for both countries. If we consider this from the perspective of Turkish history, we would like to draw attention to the following points. In this article, we will give information about the most important Italian archives for recent Turkish history. Among these archives, all of which are located in Rome, Archivio Storico Diplomatico Ministero degli Affari Esteri (Diplomatic History Archive of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs) has a special place. It is the archive with the most material on Turkey-Italy relations from the Tripoli War to the 1960s. Apart from this, another important archive in terms of political relations is Archivio Centrale dello Stato. (State Central Archive) Archivio dell’Ufficio Storico dello Stato Maggiore dell’Esercito (Land Forces Staff Archive), where military archives are kept, which is an extremely important archive in terms of military relations.

In this article, a qualitative research method that is inquisitive, interpretive and strives to understand the problem in its natural environment has been followed. We will give some technical information about these archives, which we have been working with since 1997, and based on our experience. Apart from these, we will also give information about some other archives that we have information about, although we do not work with them personally.
