Abstract

In the last quarter of XIX century, although gymnastic lesson was given in some military schools and Galatasaray Sultani school, sport had not been known as a science discipline. Sport was considered to be simple movements based on the power and strength. However, Selim Sırrı Bey sent to Sweden to receive sports education in Sweden, there Selim Sırrı Bey understood that sport is a specific science discipline. Selim Sırrı after returning to the country by serving in the Ministry of Education has made action on this issue. Physical Education Deparmant in Gazi Education Institute founded in the Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK period. The Gazi Physical Education Department was contributed to the development of Turkish education system, development of social and cultural life, domestic and international relationship of Gazi Physical Education Department and physical education how accepted as a branch of science and the studies for the development of this science.
