Single Party Period of Political and Cultural Life in Merzifon

Abstract

Located between Amasya-Çorum and Samsun provinces, the district of Merzifon has always been a center of economical and cultural importance thanks to its critical location. It has maintained its existence and importance even after declaration of the Republic. The purpose of this study is to present a historical account of the times Merzifon district has passed through during the period when Republic of Turkey tried to establish the same modernization conditions as in the West, i.e. the years when the fastest changes in the history of republic occurred. Especially Merzifon's political, social, economical structure and cultural institutions between 1923-1950, when tra-ditional society was gradually replaced by the modernized social institutions, were handled.
